World’s largest set of shark jaws hits the auction block

At 11 feet wide and over 8 feet tall, the world’s largest set of shark jaws composed of 182 fossil teeth will be up for grabs in Dallas, Texas in June at the Heritage Auction Galleries. This huge prehistoric jaw once belonged to a Megalodon shark, the largest predatory shark ever to have existed on our planet. It took late fossil hunter Vito Bertucci more than 16 years to assemble this piece with specimens of the appropriate size and shape. Vito Bertucci personally collected most of the specimens in the rivers of South Carolina. Megalodon had ruled the oceans and the marine food chain almost 20 million years.

Megalodon could exceed 100 feet in length and had teeth 7 inches across. The largest jaw set in the world, up for auction, also contains four teeth that measure over 7 inches each along the diagonal. The asking price for the world’s largest shark’s jaw is $625,000. The auction house expects it to sell for $700,000 and up.
